but right now the obama campaign is solidly and consistently ahead. tactically what that means is the obama campaign has to convert being ahead in people's preferences to actual votes. since they are clearly ahead, a good time to get those votes cast is right now. because thanks to early voting, people are casting ballots right now. so this lead that they have now in the polls can be banked. it can be turned into actual votes while they're still ahead, even if they don't end up being this far ahead by election day. iowa became the first swing state in the nation where voters are actually voting early in person. iowa has interesting rules where if you get enough signatures from your area, you can ask to have a pop-up popping place, sort of like if food places offered voting. obama voters asked for a pop-up voting place at the university of northern iowa. they had the first lady at the go vote now event. they had the first lady speak and they had the university marching band lead people from the audience of the first lady's speech directly to the voting

president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that information? how do you think president obama should then prepare for the second debate? should he just do exactly what he did this past wednesday night, except keep a closer eye out for the cheating because that is the only reason he lost? i mean, it may be comforting to tell yourself this is what really went wrong here but that is not really what went wrong here and making the case that it was does not help your candidate. the worst example of this though, the invention of a comforting new parallel reality that does not mean you have to face hard truths. the worst new instance of this is how the right today responded to the new jobs numbers. today the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%. it didn't drop for any of

we expected an aggressive debater to show up last night on the debate stage with barack obama. we didn't expect an aggressively dishonest debater to show up. that's what we got in mitt romney. what could the president have done differently? of course, we'll recalibrate and recalculate based on the mitt romney that showed up last night. we've got two more debates left. now we know what we're dealing with. we know that mitt romney will, in a split second, walk away from the central policy of his entire economic plan because he knows it's bad politics. he has been campaigning on this $5 trillion tax cut since the beginning of the primaries. and last night he tried to walk away from it, because he knows he's going to have to tell the middle class that he's going to have to raise their taxes if he wants to pay for it. >> the $5 trillion cut, the president talked about that today. that was sort of the heart when you talk about him being honest, it comes down to the tax cuts. >> with well, there's plenty of other examples. >> let me play this one and get your reaction. >> when i got o

this week the etch-a-sketch came alive during his debate with president obama. he got away with it. he keeps this act up or will we have to fight a tougher fight with obama in the next rounded? michael steele is here with us and cynthia tucker is here as well. thank you, cynthia and michael, there's an old tradition in politics you go to the fringe or hard left or right to win the caucuses and start to move slowly, the big battleship around so by labor day you're ready to confront the enemy at the center. he didn't do that. he stayed right through the summer and masterfully, wednesday, started to go i'm for pre-existing condition coverage, i'm for education and all this good stuff. >> i think part of that, you're right, in your analysis there. that's what happens politically. i think for the romney campaign they took that strategy, elongated it because they had shoring up to do with their base. >> can you pull it off? can you make that switcharoo in september. >> i think you can. >> or october rather. >> i think you can. number one. number two, we saw obama do the same thing. he was
